Anguish

Using a mix of acrylic background and thick oil, I aimed to use a monochromatic colour scheme and impasto techniques to create a variety of human expressions in a more abstracted form. For this piece, I contrasted the medium grey background with The much lighter grey and white, and the much darker grey and black.

The face was developed as it was painted on, rather than planned out beforehand, while using references for the angle of the face, as well as shading. There is no colour in this piece, rather using shades of grey to express emotion, and is painted onto a textured background using a pallet knife, creating patterns within the paint. There was not much planning involved with this piece, rather deciding to go with the flow of the emotions.
